We have a busy Autumn term, with three very different concerts to prepare for.
Our main autumn concert is at 7:30pm on Saturday 17 November, in the Chapel at St John’s School, Leatherhead. We are joining forces with St Johns Choral Society for a performance of Handel’s Israel in Egypt oratorio, conducted by Ian Assersohn.
This is music on a large scale, telling the story of the Biblical book of Exodus, complete with plagues of frogs and a risky escape through the Red Sea. With double choir, orchestra and soloists, it promises to be an evening of dramatic music. Fans of Messiah are strongly advised to come along and hear what else Mr Handel has up his sleeve!
Earlier in November, many of us are travelling to Mons in Belgium, where we are extremely honoured to be taking part in the commemoration of the city’s liberation by Canadian troops at the end of the first World War. On this 100th anniversary, there will be a special weekend of events, including a grand parade and civic ceremony in the Grand Place on the afternoon of 11 November.
We are honoured to find ourselves representing the UK at this international occasion, alongside civic and military representatives of the three nations involved in the liberation of the city 100 years ago. Following the parade, we join with orchestras from Wallonia and Canada to take part in the civic ceremony, performing music by Haydn, Karl Jenkins and our Musical Director Ian Assersohn.
We are delighted that the programme for the Mons Commemoration will include the beautiful Elegy from Ian’s Dies Irae Cantata, which Leatherhead Choral Society premiered in 2016, along with friends from Epsom Male Voice Choir and Farnham Youth Junior Choir.
Finally, on 15 December we will be holding our annual Family Christmas Concert at Christ Church (United Reformed) Church in Leatherhead. On this occasion, we are being conducted by our Assistant Musical Director Sarah Burston. Sarah regularly works with Ian to rehearse the choir and we enjoy learning from her extensive choral expertise, which she imparts with a great sense of fun. We look forward to working with her as we celebrate Christmas with our friends and supporters.
