Hi all, a few people have asked me about recommended recordings of Israel in Egypt so I thought I’d put some ideas on here.
One that I like is the Taverner Choir and Players conducted by Andrew Parrott on the Erato label. This one has the advantage of including the original Part One of the work, the Funeral Anthem for Queen Caroline.
There is also one by the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque soloists conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. It’s good but for me doesn’t quite have the energy and drama of the Parrott one. It’s all subjective in the end though.
There are a number of others around but I’m not as familiar with them - if you have a favourite you think is better than the two I’ve mentioned do let me know.
But whichever one you go for, do listen to the work as much as you possibly can, ideally with score in hand. It will really help you in rehearsal.
