Gareth Giles served as Head Chorister at Hereford Cathedral – the 3rd generation of his family to do so – and commenced piano lessons aged four and organ aged nine.
He became professional while still at School, soloing on piano and organ as well as being accompanist and M.D. for many choirs, ensembles and musical productions. He first studied organ with Dr Roy Massey at Hereford, gaining his diploma of Associateship of the Royal College of Organists at 16. At the Royal College of Music, he studied organ with Nicholas Danby and piano with Niel Immelman. After graduating he became a piano teacher, organist and Director of Music at Heathside School.
Gareth has over 40 years of playing experience, as an organist, pianist, accompanist, concert artist and function pianist. Additionally, Gareth has been MD of many Church, Male, Female, Mixed and School choirs since becoming a freelance musician and educator in 2000. He has held many residencies as a lounge pianist, including current positions at the RAC Country Club and the Petersham Hotel, entertaining clients who have included Henry Mancini, Michael Caine, Johnny Mathis and Tony Curtis. He also had the honour of performing for the Prince and Princess of Wales.
As an accompanist, Gareth is heavily in demand for soloists, music exams, Dramatic groups and choirs. He has accompanied under John Rutter, Sir David Willcocks and Sir Richard Stilgoe. He is currently MD of Shalford Choral, Accompanist to Leatherhead Choral Society and Organist of FCCS, Claygate.
Gareth has played the organ at 17 UK Cathedrals and been accompanist at the major London concert venues. He has composed seven children’s cantatas, over 40 Christmas carols, sacred and secular vocal music, instrumental and orchestral works. Some of his works have premiered at the Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican, Dorking Halls and Guildford Cathedral.
