LCS enters the blogosphere

Choral Societies have been around in the UK for a long time. Many of the oldest ones date from the excitement generated by the Handel commemoration in 1784.

Leatherhead is quite a bit younger than that – we were founded in 1928 to take part in the Leith Hill Musical Festival in Dorking. And for many years I think competing in the Festival was just about all the society did in an average year. Things are very different now, what with concerts in the summer and autumn, Christmas concerts, workshops, charity concerts and on and on…

But this autumn we’re taking on our biggest challenge yet. On November 24th we’re teaming up with three other choirs – Horsley and Oxshott Choral Societies and Concordia Singers – to tackle Verdi’s Requiem in the brand new 700-seater GLive in Guildford. The orchestra will be the wonderful English Festival Orchestra and we’ve got some wonderful soloists lined up.

But have we bitten off more than we can chew? Can we pull it off? That’s what this blog is going to be all about. As they say: Watch this space…

Have we bitten off more than we can chew? Absolutely not! Working in collaboration with Horsley Choral Society, Oxshott Choral Society and Concordia Singers gives us a fabulous opportunity to sing as part of a large choir – and Verdi’s Requiem needs a large chorus!

Also, more singers means more people to sell tickets – and at this stage, we are looking for each singer to sell 3 tickets to help us ensure we sing to a full auditorium, and cover the costs of staging this wonderful concert.

It’s really exciting – and the co-operation / collaboration from the other choirs has been fantastic.

It is so exciting to think that we are going to be part of this project. Thanks to all the other choirs who have got behind the idea it made it a reality.
I know that our enthusiasm will bubble over to everyone involved and make it a night to remember!

Even though the Verdi concert isn’t until November there is a lot of work already been done and continues behind the scenes! (my excuse for not having practiced LHMF music, don’t tell Ian!) The happy band that is the Verdi committee meet again at the beginning of March to catch up with what has been accomplished, and have drink and cakes! It has been great getting to know people from the other choirs (many of whom we recognise from LHMF competition day) and discovering their talents! What a great idea this collaboration has been……
Watch this space for a first look at the publicity flier – it is splendid

Thank you to Ian and the Leatherhead members who have got this project off the ground and thank you for all of the hard work you’ve done so far. Oxshott are very excited to be part of the Four Choirs – it’s going to be such an inspiring event.
